This medicine inhibits enzymes that are on the surface of type A/B influenza virus and the release of newly-produced virus from infected cells, and stops the expansion of influenza virus infection.
It is usually used to prevent type A/B influenza virus infection. However, the basis of prevention against influenza infection is prevention by vaccination. This medicine is not an alternative to prophylactic vaccination. It is not effective against influenza C virus infection or fungal infections.

Usage/Dosage

In general, for adults and children, inhale 2 blisters (10 mg of zanamivir) at a time, once a day, for 10 days with a special inhaler. Strictly follow the instructions.
For prophylaxis, use this medicine within the first 1.5 days after contacting with flu-stricken patient.
The prophylactic efficacy against influenza lasts only as long as this medicine is administered.
If you have a chronic respiratory disease (bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.) and plan to use this medicine concomitantly with an inhalation medicine (short-acting bronchodilators, etc.) for the chronic respiratory disease, use that inhalation medicine before using this medicine.
This medicine is intended only for oral inhalation using a special inhaler (Diskhaler). Perforate blister (make hole) just before your inhalation.
Read the instruction leaflet for users thoroughly before using this medicine (Japanese version only). This medicine should be inhaled in a relaxed position (sitting position, etc.).
If you miss a dose at the time instructed, inhale the missed dose (2 blisters) as soon as possible. You should never inhale two doses at one time.
If you accidentally inhale more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not stop inhaling this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Cautions

If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines or foods.
If you have an allergy to dairy products.
If you are immunocompromised.
If you have chronic respiratory disease such as bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)
Abnormal behavior has been reported in patients infected with influenza, regardless of the use or non-use, or the type of influenza antiviral medicine prescribed. Caregivers should take preventive measures for accidents including falls for at least 2 days after patients develop fever if they are treated at home.
If any symptoms such as syncope and shock appear, lie on your back, take a rest, and then visit your doctor immediately.
Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature (1 to 30 degrees Celsius), away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Discard the remainder. Do not store them. If you do not know how to discard, seek advice of your pharmacy or medical institution. Do not give the unused medicines to others.

Contraindication

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include rash, diarrhea and nausea/vomiting. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
blood pressure falling, dyspnea, pharyngeal/laryngeal edema[shock, anaphylaxis]
sudden shortness of breath, whistling breath, breathing difficulty[bronchospasm, dyspnea]
fever, eye bloodshot, round or oval red rash[toxic epidermal necrolysis, oculomucocutaneous syndrome, erythema multiform]
sudden running, wandering[abnormal behavior]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.
